Wiz - 2/2/16

In this lesson we started thinking about the different musical numbers within the Wiz, and were split into three groups and each got a number to mind map and start creating ideas for we then had to pitch our ideas to the rest of the group. This task was good as it got everyone to think about the scenes in detail and how they envision it, I think it was effective because it helped everyone get more into The Wiz more.

I was in Ash's group with Bubu and Sam and we had to focus on the Crow number and the crows as characters. We started by listening to the track and then discussing any ideas we thought of, this gave us a lot of ideas as we could really get the vibe of the number, helping us to create moves which were appropriate for the number.

We also watched a few versions of the number and came up with an overall of how we wanted the Crows to look like and act.

Overall we felt that the Crows should be quite comedic and funky but still have elements of darkness to them, I came up with the ideas that they should have witty characterised movement to fit with the mood of the number also complimenting their characteristics which come across as slightly cocky and brassy. Lastly a lot of their movement will be influenced by the scarecrow and their reactions to his words and movement.

For the costume we went with typical crow like aspects for example black wings and black morph suits to create the stereotypical crow look, but we also wanted to incorporate black face paint to make it more realistic and we liked the idea in the latest version of The Wiz where they have worn waist coats on so added this to the look. The waistcoats kind of represents the status of the crows and how they are in charge of the scarecrow.

We decided that we wanted the majority of the guys from year 13 as the crows as they would be the right fit for the crows and they have ideas for the number.

We showed some movements that we liked for the crows many of them were shoulder related movements that were quite edgy and funky. I came up with the idea that they should include a few isolations, like sharp neck movements like an actual crow firstly for characterisation but it also adds to the darkness elements of their characters.

After this we had to think about our characters main song and ideas which we would like for the number in particular.

For Dorothy I chose the song Home as that is her biggest number not only in general but also because its a character changing moment she finally works out what she wants which is the song Home.
I was thinking for the number to be quite natural lighting as this song is really about her discovering what she wants so I don't think it should be too flashy maybe it could dim slightly from when the others have gone off, when she clips her shoes at the end I had the idea that their could be a spotlight on the shoes before, Kansas lighting comes back at the end of the song.
