Wiz 19/4

For this lesson we mainly did singing with Kim and blocking some songs.

We started off going through the song Who Do You Think You Are? in this song Dorothy and the friends are confronting The Wiz about him being a liar and who does he think he is making himself out as this big miracle when he is not. I like this song because all the friends come together as they are all angry I just think it shows that they stick together in all situations. It actually is quite a tricky sing as the girl harmony as it is quite high and as she (Dorothy) is meant to be mad at this point it is quite difficult to be mad and sing in that key at the same time but after running it a few times it seem to be okay just a challenge. I like how earlier in the story they were all scared of the Wiz but now they are against him and stand up to him I think it really shows how far they have come through the story as friends as well as individuals.

After this Jess and I ran through Home with Kim as well as we just wanted to run it before blocking it, in my opinion this is one of my favourite songs even though its a big song its emotional and you can just let go with it because that is its purpose within Dorothy's story in my interpretation and analysis of her.

We then blocked it, most of it is blocked just to sing to the audience apart from a few sections in which Dorothy hugs her friends goodbye and looks at them before turning back to the audience. I loved the blocking for this because I think it really adds more depth to the song as well as giving it more dynamics and making it more interesting for the audience. The beginning is just at the audience because it is her contemplating her thoughts and as she goes to hug her friends it goes along the words about how she now knows where she is going and how she's found love and affection adding to the emotion of the song.

I think that in this lesson that my characterisation went quite well as well as my focus, I need to work on learning my harmonies I will do this by practising them at home by using the recordings I made in rehearsal and have them learnt by next week.
